5. Codename: CURE

Codename Cure

Codename CURE is a cooperative first-person zombie shooter game developed by Hoobalugalar_X and is free to download. It was released in 2017 and has a very positive review rating on Steam.

This game doesn’t have a lot to it but can still be fun to play with friends or other players online in up to five-player co-op. There are three main game modes: survival, bomb escape, and PvP.

In survival, you try to survive as the game throws waves of zombies at you. In bomb escape, you have to plant a bomb at a specified location and then get to an extraction point before your timer runs out. In PvP, you take on other players while dealing with roaming packs of zombies.

There are five different in-game class types. Pointmen, Support, Assault, Technician, and Sniper. Each class has its own unique weapons and play styles. Since the classes excel in different areas, it’s useful to have a team of five that makes use of all of the classes, especially when playing in higher-difficulty settings.

Codename CURE is a basic but satisfying first-person zombie shooter that you can enjoy with friends. It has fast-paced enjoyable combat, and it’s free-to-play, making it this list’s number five pick.

4. Propagation VR

Propagation VR

Propagation VR is a virtual reality first-person static wave shooting horror game developed by WanadevStudio and is free to download on Steam. It was first released in 2020 and has a very positive review rating on Steam.

This game takes place in an abandoned subway station overrun with mutant zombies. The atmosphere is moody and intense, and the combination of survival horror and virtual reality is sure to get your blood pumping.

The game only has one level, and your only objective is to survive as waves of zombies descend on you from the darkness. You have two guns and your fists to beat back your undead assailants, and there’s no running or dodging, so you’ll have to try to keep your cool and make your shots count, which is easier said than done.

One playthrough of the game takes about 30 minutes, assuming you survive. Luckily, there are personal high scores and four difficulty modes for anyone interested in spending more time in a zombie-infested subway.

Propagation VR is a simple and straightforward title that makes excellent and terrifying use of virtual reality and is a great way to scare yourself and have some fun for free, albeit short-lived, assuming that you own a VR set or can borrow one from a friend.

3. SAS Zombie Assault 4

SAS Zombie Assault 4

SAS Zombie Assault 4 is a free top-down zombie shooter game developed by Ninja Kiwi and is free to download on Steam. It was released for PC in 2017 and currently has a very positive review rating on Steam

This game is set in the year 3104 after a mysterious virus has infected a large part of humanity. You play as one of three classes: The Assault class, the Heavy class, or the Medic class. Each class has seven unique abilities as well as an ultimate ability that you’ll unlock through level progression.

Unlike previous games in the series, you upgrade your weapons and armor through strongboxes found during missions and received upon leveling.

In addition to all the new loot and character abilities available, there are 17 different zombie types to fight throughout the game. These different zombie types can also evolve as you progress through the game, gaining new powers and testing your character’s power level.

There’s lots of gear and character customization in SAS Zombie Assault 4, which adds to the depth of replay value overall but also creates more of a grind if you want to get through all of the content that the game has to offer. And, the game can be played single-player or as a four-person online co-op which is a plus.

This is a good game if you like fast-paced top-down shooters with a progression system. It’s worth noting that the game pushes its paid content, but it’s free to play, so it’s hard to complain about that too much.

2. No More Room in Hell

No More Room In Hell

No More Room in Hell is a first-person survival horror co-op game created by Matt Kazan that is free to download on Steam. It was first released in 2011 as a mod for Half-Life 2 and was re-released in 2013 as a stand-alone game. It currently has a very positive review rating on Steam.

The setting of the game will be familiar to fans of zombie movies and games. You take on the role of one of eight playable survivors in a dark and gritty world of a zombie apocalypse. This is a cooperative title, and how you play or fail to play as a team separates success from infection and, eventually, disaster.

Even one bite or scratch can lead to bleeding out or a slowly spreading infection, making each interaction with a zombie more tense. You’ll be able to slow the infection using phalanx pills, but that will only buy you five minutes at a time.

If you or a teammate are overcome with the zombie infection you’ll turn into a zombie yourself. This leads to an interesting decision of when you keep a teammate around and when to stop them before they turn into a zombie and endanger the whole team.

No More Room in Hell uses high stakes and creepy realism to make a game that is a fun and unique take on a zombie co-op shooter. Strong map design and the passion of the community and developers of this game have made it a fan favorite for the last 10 years and landed it at the number two spot on our list.

1. Unturned

Unturned

Unturned is a zombie survival game developed by Smartly Dressed Games and is free to download on Steam. It was released in 2014 and currently has a very positive review rating on Steam.

One of the first things you’re likely to notice about this game is the blocky and simplistic graphics, but as we all know, good graphics don’t make a good game–There are plenty of classics that have been made with outdated graphical styles or minimal visual polish.

This game already had a whopping 500K+ reviews on Steam, which is no small feat for a free game made by an indie developer, but it’s pretty easy to see why. It’s a huge game with a lot to do and is a passion project of the developer rather than a calculated money grab.

While playing, you can do the normal survival game stuff such as crafting, looting, and base building while fending for yourself in a world full of zombies and other hostile players. You can even grow your own crops, and there are plenty of items and vehicles to play around with as you get better gear and progress to more challenging areas.

One of the best parts of Unturned is you have the freedom to play as you want. Additionally, it was made to be modded, and the community has taken full advantage of this fact.

This means if you ever run out of things to do in the base game or just feel ready for a change of pace there are plenty of maps and mods to keep you and your friends busy.

Altogether, Unturned is one of the absolute best free zombie games in 2023 and the number one spot on our list.
